Notes for Henry S. Shaffer:

THEORY:

1860--

S.H. Shafer (indexed Straper) 23 years old {born ca 1837} and born in Ohio, is located in Sugar Creek, Lykins (now Miami) Co., Kansas.  This SE corner of the county is approximately 35 miles  from Fort Scott, Kansas.   S.H. Shafer is likely Henry S. Shaffer and he goes to Fort Scott, Kansas to join the military.  There he meets and marries Zarelda "Copple" Denton.

1862

From the "Early History of Sugar Creek" by J. H. Rhea as printed in the Drexel Star in 1919, we find an article on Rockville, Miami Co., and the Civil War.  Specifically:

"All able-bodied men were called into the service during that struggle. Even the men too old for service, were ushered into the State Militia.  Missouri fought on the side of the confederacy and this little band of people settled on the Kansas side, proudly flew the union flag for Abraham Lincoln."

"A stockade was built around the old stone church at Rockville."

"All the people of this little community were residing within the stockade; that was: boys, girls, little children, women, and men too old to fight."

Clearly, the fighting men were now in the Army.  Where would "SH" most likely have gone?  35 miles south to Fort Scott, Kansas

8/22/1862

Henry joined the Union Army.  He was mustered-in the 2nd Independent Battery of the Kansas Light Artillery at Fort Scott, Kansas.  Most all of his duty was as a Corporal in detached service without orders, with the Right Section.  Later, they were sent to Little Rock, Arkansas.

03 Jul 1863

In Fort Scott, Bourbon Co., KS Henry S. Shaffer married Zarelda Denton

6/6/1865

Henry was admitted to General Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas with Scurvy.  In his hospital record, he is reported to be married, 28 years old,{born ca 1837} and of Ohio nativity.
