Descendants of Samuel & Sarah Bell

First Generation

      1. Samuel BELL 1  was born2  about 1747 in Virginia. He died3,4  on 21 Mar 1778/1780 in Washington Co., Virginia.

First record of Samuel Bell in Washington County Virginia was 1772. He was a signer of the petition to call Reverend

Charles Cummings to serve the ministerial needs of the Ebbing and Sinking Springs Presbyterian congregations.

Subsquentialy, Samuel drew up his will in February of 1780 and it was probated in Washington County Court March 21 of

that same year. It was recorded in Will Book No. 1, page 37. In his will, he named his wife as Sarah and his two children as

James and Hannah Bell. Each was to enjoy a third of his estate. In addition, James was to be bound out to David Beaty

with as much as one third of James' share going towards this venture. Executors were Andrew Bogan and Samuel Evans.

William Evins and Andrew Evans proved the will in court. Bond in the amount of four thousand pounds was posted by

Samuel Evans, Andrew Bogan, William Blackburn, and William Beaty. No other mention of the settlement of this estate is

mentioned in Washington County records.

pages 1343, 1355 (from Mathew T. Bell)

The family may also have lived in the Glade Springs area near present day Washington Co., Tennessee before moving to

Madison Co., Kentucky. He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Samuel married5  Sarah  before 1774 in Frederick, Virginia. Sarah was born6  about 1756 in Virginia. She died7,8  about 1860 in Wilkes Co., Georgia.

While possible to have lived over 100 years during the 18th and 19th centuries it is doubtful.

Samuel and Sarah had the following children:

               2 F         i.  Hannah BELL 9  was born10,11  in 1767/1772 in Washington Co., Virginia.

First official record of Hannah Bell came when she was named in her father's will which was recorded in

1780 in Washington County, Virginia. It wasn't until March 16, 1784 before terms of that will began to

unfold. On that date she appeared in a Lincoln County, Kentucky Court to select a guardian. A guardian

bond was posted by Daniel McKinny, Samuel Briggs, and Hugh Logan. It carried an obligation of one

thousand pounds. Logan was chosen as guardian. Then on 27 September 1787, Robert Montgomery

gave his consent for her marriage to Elijah Harbour. In 1795 Elijah and Hannah were living in Madison

County, Kentucky on a track of land that was bordered by one owned by Sarah Bell. Both properties

were situated on Silver Creek and purchased from George Smith of Powhattan County, Virginia. Another

interesting fact was that Hannah and James Bell appeared on the Madison County Tax roll as co-owners

of an 1875 Acre track in Mason County on the Licking River. Later tax records show that Elijah Harbour

was the Assignee of this property. The survey and land warrant described the owners as the heirs of

Samuel Bell.  The Bells and Harbours migrated south together to Wilson County, Tennessee where they

appeared in the same tax district in 1804 and 1805. Eventually, they moved to Rutherford and Warren

Counties. The Bells settled on the East Fork of the Stones River near the mouth of Hollis Creek and the

Harbours just south of there in Warren County. __Sources: 1) Index to Early Kentucky & Virginia Land

Hannah married Elijah HARBOUR 12,13  on 27 Sep 1787 in Lincoln Co., Kentucky. Elijah was born in 1763/1765 in Virginia. He died about 1838 in Wayne Co., Tennessee.

+          3 M        ii.  James BELL  was born about 1777. He died in Sep 1828.

Second Generation

      3. James BELL 14,15  (Samuel) was born16  about 1777 in Washington Co. Virginia. He died in Sep 1828 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee.

James Bell was the first clerk of the Brawley Fork Baptist Church. His affiliation with this church is born out in a deed dated

15 July 1807 between Joshua Barton of the one part and James Bell and William Hollis and other trustees of the other part.

It was a gift of land to be used for the future site of the Brawley Fork Church located south-east of Readyville. __James died

testate in 1828. When his plantation was eventually sold to Maxwell Chambers of Rowan County, North Carolina, all of the

living heirs had to approve its sale. This gave a unique snapshot in time, 1842, as to where his children had all relocated

following his death. One was in Illinois, some still in Tennessee, and others in Missouri.  The land owned by James Bell

using today’s milestones was on both sides of Hollis Creek. Its northerly border would have intersected Hollis Road at the

point the road now crosses over from the west to the east bank. Its easterly line would have run below and back of

Campbell's residence. Its once southerly reaches would have extended across the new Murfreesboro to Woodbury

Highway. On the west it would have included the southern half of River Road and both sides of the Stones River.

Neighbors then were Thomas Rucker and James Cherry to the north; Gideon Rucker to the west; and Burrell Walker to the

south west. __Prior to moving to Tennessee, James Bell was an early resident of both Lincoln and Madison County

Kentucky. His sister, Hannah, married Elijah Harbour in Lincoln County in 1787. On the 1795 tax census for Madison

County he and Hannah were listed as owners of 1875 acres in Mason County, assignee of which was Elijah Harbour. This

property originated from a Treasury Warrant, #8433. The land survey, #490, was made on March 26, 1789 and recorded in

Book 1, page 313. When James' mother, Sarah, sold her 60 acres in 1796 to Barnabas Johnson, she and Elijah Harbour

had been living on adjoining parcels located on Silver Creek. Both parcels were purchased from George Smith of

Powhatan County Virginia.

Third Generation

      4. Elisha BELL 28  (James, Samuel) was born on 25 Jan 1797 in Madison Co., Kentucky. He died29  on 30 Oct 1834 in Auburntown, Cannon Co., Tennessee. He was buried in Saffel Cemetery, Auburntown, Cannon Co., Tennessee.

Occ: Baptist Minister

Title: Rev.

Elisha was an ordained minister sent out by the Brawley Fork Baptist Church, as noted in "Grime's History of Middle

Tennessee Baptists".

Elisha married30,31  Martha BURGE  about 1815/1816 in Tennessee. Martha was born32  on 6 Jun 1797 in North Carolina. She died33  on 24 Nov 1879 in Newton Co., Missouri. She was buried in Old Civil War Cemetery, Newton Co., Missouri.

They had the following children:

+        15 M        i.  Rev. James BELL  was born on 10 Jan 1816. He died on 26 Mar 1877.

16 M        ii.  Jeremiah BELL  was born34  on 24 Sep 1817 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. He was buried in Old Civil War Cemetery, Newton Co., Missouri.

20 F        vi.  Amy Elizabeth BELL  was born37  about 1827 in Cannon Co., Tennessee.

21 F       vii.  Susannah D. BELL  was born38  on 15 Mar 1828 in Rutherford Co., Tennessee. She died39  on 2 Jun 1907 in Neosho, Newton Co., Missouri.

Susannah Bell, daughter of Elisha and Martha Burge Bell, married William Hubbard Jr. Most of us

believe that Martha had married William Hubbard after the death of Elisha and before 1850 and possibly

before arriving in Newton Co. MO. Susannah was living in the William and Martha household in 1850.

The Hubbards were from Wilson Co. TN. near the area that Elisha and Martha had been living. Finally,

Martha is buried in Newton Co. Mo so she had obviously been living there and was likely remarried. All

this points to a likelihood that Martha Hubbard and Martha Burgie were one and the same. Richard

Burge in James Bell's will and the resulting surrender of notes held by James Bell on Richard Burge to

Elisha suggests that a family tie to Burge.  Comment from Thomas J. Bell

Susannah married William R. HUBBARD 40  on 6 May 1847 in Newton Co., Missouri. William was born on 11 Apr 1825 in Wilson Co., Tennessee.

    10. Rev. Samuel BELL 42  (James, Samuel) was born43,44,45  about 1809 in Culpepper, Rutherford Co., Tennessee.

Occ: Reverend. Notes from author's mother have this previously unnamed Rev. Bell as a circuit riding Baptist preacher to

the Cherokee people of Tennessee.  This may be when the family legend of Indian ancestry came about.

Samuel's father may have owned slaves. This was against Samuel's beliefs and may be a reason that he left home.

Interview: by Wm. M. Wyatt, April 16, 2000, Medford, Oregon in the home of Marvin and Mary Bandy.  Mary Elizabeth

(Morgan) Bandy, daughter in law to Norma Vaughan who is daughter of Millie Della Roberts-Vaughan, daughter of

MELISSA BELL-DURHAM:

The following story was told as she heard it from Norma Vaughan.  MELISSA BELL-DURHAM, was orphaned following

her parent's death (supposed to have been killed). Melissa is half Cherokee or possibly full blood Cherokee. Was taken

into the home of an unknown named woman to be cared for.  This woman treated Melissa Bell so badly due to the Indian

background that Melissa, about age seven, killed the woman by slashing her neck while she slept.  Apparently no charges

As written on 3x5 notepaper by Ira W. Roberts - transcribed verbatim

I was born Sept. 17, 1901 on my fathers 24th birthday (John W. Roberts) Daton Twsp 3 mi SE of Daton (Now Racine)

Missouri.

His father (Frank Roberts) and mother (Mary E. Roberts)  Frank a civil war vet.  Union - Mary E. father name Durham

(Bill) a full blood Irishman - owner of a large land holding in western part of Newton County, Mo.  Wife - part Indian -

enough to be entitled to her share of Indian allotment land - but Great Grandpa Durham forbid.  He gave or donated the

land for the site of the town of what is now Seneca Missouri.

He was a carpenter of some renown (said to have possessed the largest set of tools west of the Allegany’s)  He also

was an accomplished leather tanner and apparently jack of all trades.

At the beginning of the civil war with only a few neighbors in that area of Mo.  Most of them sympathetic with the South -

He professed like sympathy while tanning leather and saddle and boots and laying in provisions for his wife and 13

children.  When ready he went to Kansas and joined the Union Army along with his brother.

Learning of this, his neighbors consisting of the Sparlings - Buzzards and other locals - formed a raiding party and came

in by night, stole all supplies - ran off all cattle and live stock and burned their cabin while Grand mother Durham and 13

children (Grandmother Roberts was 13 years old at that time) hid out in the timber and made it to sympathetic neighbors

until Great grandpa Durham could obtain a furlough and come home - rebuild the cabin and restock the larder.

This happened time after time although after the war these same bushwhackers became integrated into the family circle

through marriage and many of them are now our relatives.

At one time when Great grandpa Durham and his brother came home to help replenish the family larder.  They both

were out in front of their cabin without any firearms when a group of horsemen rode up and called them out to the gate -

After a brief conversation the leader yelled 'Dougan Boys` and at that signal the other horsemen took off but the leader

started firing at Great grandfather Durham and his brother - killing his brother but missing Great grandpa Durham.

At another time when Great grandfather Durham was home to replenish his family larder his bushwhacker friends(?)

surrounded his cabin at night and demanded he come out or they would burn him out.

It is said that he opened the door and stood behind it and shouted that if they came after him he would get them one by

one.  So they set fire to his cabin and when he came out to fight it out with them they riddled him with buckshot and left him

for dead.  However his sympathetic friends and relatives put him on a horse and took him 16 miles to Neosho Mo. to the

nearest doctor who removed all but 17 of the buckshot (one of which grazed his windpipe) which he carried to his grave.
